Golden Teacher vs Penis Envy: Which Strain Should You Pick?
These two come up more than any other comparison in cubensis, and they sit at opposite ends of the same shelf. One is the reliable standard almost everyone starts with. The other has a reputation for being roughly twice as strong and considerably less predictable.
Both are 28g for $75 at SuperFunGuy, so price isn’t going to decide it for you. Potency and consistency will.
Golden Teacher

The most widely grown psilocybe cubensis strain there is, and the default starting point for most people. It’s named for its golden caps — broad, with a distinctive ring and often a paler centre — and it’s been in circulation since the 1980s.
What makes it the standard
Consistency. Golden Teacher grows readily, fruits reliably, and — the part that matters when you’re buying rather than growing — holds steady potency batch to batch. Effects are typically described as gentler and more visual than overwhelming, with a slower onset than the heavier strains.
That predictability is the entire argument for it. When you know roughly what a given amount does, you can plan around it. With more variable strains you’re recalibrating every time.
Texas Penis Envy

Penis Envy is the strain with the reputation, and it’s earned rather than marketing. The lineage traces back to a sample collected in the Amazon and selectively bred over decades into something visually distinct — short, dense, thick-stemmed, with caps that barely open.
Why it’s stronger
Density. Penis Envy fruits are physically much denser than Golden Teacher, and the psilocybin content per gram is substantially higher — commonly cited as up to twice as strong, though that figure varies by batch and grower.
It’s also slow and difficult to cultivate, which is why it’s less common and why supply is inconsistent. The Texas variant keeps most of the potency while growing somewhat faster and more reliably.
What it doesn’t offer is predictability. Two grams of Penis Envy is not two grams of Golden Teacher, and treating them as interchangeable is the single most common mistake people make with it.

Which One Should You Buy?
Pick Golden Teacher if
You’re new to cubensis, or you value knowing what you’re getting over raw strength. Same price, far less guesswork, and the strain almost every comparison uses as its baseline.
Pick Texas Penis Envy if
You already know how cubensis affects you and find standard strains underwhelming. At identical price per ounce you’re getting significantly more potency for your money — provided you actually adjust for it rather than reaching for your usual amount.
If You Want Something Between Them
These two aren’t the only options, and the middle of the range is worth a look.
Mazatapec — the gentler end

A Mexican landrace with a long history of traditional use, and one of the gentler strains on the shelf. Mazatapec 28G — $65
Ghost — the stronger end

Pale, potent, and one of the stronger options if Penis Envy is unavailable. Ghost 28G — $79
Code Blue — heavy bruising

Named for how heavily it blues when handled, which is the visible marker of psilocin content. Code Blue 28G — $79
Not Sure Yet? Don’t Buy an Ounce

Committing $75 to a strain you’ve never tried is a bad way to find out you prefer the other one. Two cheaper entry points:
The Assorted Psilocybin Mushroom 14G at $49 lets you compare across strains before picking a favourite.
Or Mycro at $30 if you’d rather have something pre-measured than weigh dried fruit yourself — measuring by eye is where most inconsistency actually comes from, not the strain.
A Note on Strain Names
Worth knowing: all of these are the same species, Psilocybe cubensis. Strain differences are real but narrower than the naming suggests, and growing conditions affect potency as much as genetics does. A well-grown Golden Teacher can outperform a poorly grown Penis Envy.
Treat strain as a guide rather than a guarantee, and start lower than you think with anything unfamiliar. Our earlier piece on set and setting covers the part of the experience that isn’t determined by what’s in the bag.
Storage
Dried mushrooms keep well if you keep them dry. Airtight container, out of light, room temperature or cooler — moisture is the enemy, not warmth. A silica packet in the jar is worth the fifty cents. Stored properly they hold potency for months; stored badly they’ll go off long before that.
